Project Description

Canada geese (Branta canadensis) are important ecologically and economically throughout Illinois and the Midwestern U.S., and their population ecology has been well-studied in the past. However, in the last several decades since many Midwest studies have been completed, changes in the winter distribution of subarctic- breeding populations and increases in the temperate-breeding populations have occurred. Understanding the shifts in wintering distribution, timing of migration, movements, and potential conflicts with human activities using updated research techniques would lead to better management of the populations. We will investigate Canada geese wintering in the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area (GCMA) and describe their ecology, daily movements, feeding areas, roost site selection, and conflicts with people posing a threat to human health and safety in areas of interest. Results of this research will provide a better understanding of factors influencing how geese use the GCMA, source populations of geese using this area, and how wildlife and habitat managers can manage geese to increase wildlife related recreation or dissuade geese from using areas to avoid dangerous conflicts with humans.

SMART Objectives - Needs/Threats

1 - Resource Management Needs

Need/Threat Level 1
Level 1 Need/Threat N/A
Description This project is needed to evaluate current management and design future management practices of Canada geese during winter in the GCMA that pose severe risks to humans near Midway Airport. Moreover, human and goose population densities in the GCMA are projected to continually increase necessitating a detailed study of factors affecting winter movements.
